Helping Students and Their Parents Make Better Decisions

By Calif. GOP Rep. Howard 'Buck' McKeon - 01/17/07 11:02 AM ET
Yesterday, I introduced legislation – the College Affordability & Transparency Act – to help parents and students hold institutions more accountable for their role in the college cost crisis. That bill calls for more information about college costs and outcomes – information about retention rates, whether graduates are learning what they should, why costs are skyrocketing, and what colleges are doing to contain them.

I don’t view this bill as an alternative to H.R. 5, but rather a vehicle through which we can improve upon it. I also submitted it as an amendment at Rules Committee, because I believed it was a vehicle through which we could have drastically improved the underlying legislation. Unfortunately, however, the closed process has placed the issue of affordability on the back burner, and these proactive, common sense reforms will have to wait for another day.
