U.S. and India Joined By Non-Proliferation, Energy Interests

By Fla. GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen - 05/02/06 08:40 AM ET
As the world's largest and oldest democracies, India and the United States have forged a long-lasting friendship. Our common goal of safeguarding liberty and combating oppression has united India and the United States resulting in an expanding relationship. It is my hope that the Global Partnership will help to further foment and expand these mutually beneficial ties.

As Congress considers legislation to allow civilian nuclear cooperation between our two nations, I look forward to meeting with members of the Indian Parliament to discuss their views and share our concerns. I welcome the opportunity and am committed to working through the outstanding issues toward a final agreement that meets India's growing energy needs as well as our non-proliferation goals
