War not conservative (Rep. John J. Duncan)

By Rep. John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-Tenn.) - 11/18/09 12:04 PM ET

There is nothing conservative about the war in Afghanistan. The Center for Defense Information said a few months ago that we had spent over $400 billion on the war and war-related costs there. Now, the Pentagon says it will cost about $1 billion for each 1,000 additional troops we send to Afghanistan. One Republican Member from California told me recently that we could buy off every warlord in Afghanistan for $1 billion.

Fiscal conservatives should be the ones most horrified by all this spending. Conservatives who oppose big government and huge deficit spending at home should not support it in foreign countries just because it is being done by our biggest bureaucracy, the Defense Department.

We have now spent $1.5 trillion that we did not have--that we had to borrow--in Iraq and Afghanistan. Eight years is long enough. In fact, it is too long. Let's bring our troops home and start putting Americans first once again.

Johns dad was prowar, and his son John fought in the war. I am glad to see someone wanting the troops home. Of course, that is what Obama verbiaged also. I am at this point ready to elevate newbie 1st year representative John Duncan to status of President of the United States. Afterall he couldn't be any more unprepared for the commander in chief duties than the person who takes up space in the office now.BY Dan on 11/18/2009 at 12:48
Before this government can continue we must purge the dead flesh that we call democrat and republican or the infection of corruption will remain. An infection that threatens the very core of American ideals, through the death of the democrats and republicans democracy can be born anew and our country can be made to resemble more what the framers had intended .BY T1M3K1LL3R on 11/18/2009 at 18:07
John Duncan is certainly not the first Republican to be anti-war. May I say "Ron Paul" (R-TX) ? And the most promiment anti-war Republican Senator Chuck Hagel. However, let us not forget the authorization vote had more than half of the Democratic support in the Senate. So the war is certainly beyond the typical liberal/conservative divide. The Congress however is NOT THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH and theri role is to ADVISE AND CONSENT. Decisions to support having the troops in Afghanistan are made by the President. And I would certainly hope that President Obama will not put the national security interests at risk by basing on his decisions on his liberal doctrines.BY WARREN KUNG on 11/18/2009 at 22:07
If Mr. Duncan wants to be taken seriously re; the need to end this war,he must find a more beleiveable argument. To state the cost of the war, and related support is $400 Billion while factual, is misleading. This amount is a small fraction of what has been spent on TARP,Stimulus ,Clunkers etc..The so called stimulus alone is nearly double the amount of war spending.Frankly, I would rather see $ spent to keep America safe, than on non existent jobs in non existent districts.I hope with Mr Duncans strong sense of being horrified by all this spending ,we can count on him to vote no on health care reform.Certainly if he is horrified by$400 Billion,he will definetly be outraged by $1.5 Trillion.BY Sheri on 11/18/2009 at 22:25
Has someone been having lunch with Dr. Paul?BY Chris on 11/19/2009 at 00:21
Congratulations to Rep. Duncan! Empire and limited, constitutional government can never exist together. True conservatism should seek to conserve that which is most important of all: the liberty of the American people. All of the laws and restrictions that have come with the terror war must be repealed and Americans must be able to spend their own wealth investing in their own lives, not the endless destruction of the lives of others. As Robert A. Pape has shown in his book Dying to Win, suicide terrorism is generated by our overseas occupations, and as has always happened it will dry up once the occupations end. So the best way to protect our troops, our economy, our liberty, our security is peace and independence for us and for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.BY Scott on 11/19/2009 at 00:46
@SheriThe war is doing about as excellent a job at keeping us safe as the stimulus has at 'fixing' the economy.BY Ran on 11/19/2009 at 02:37
@Kung: Congress doesn't just "advise and consent," it also holds the purse strings. Therefore Congress could end the war next week if it wanted to, simply by cutting off the funds to fight it.BY Strider on 11/19/2009 at 07:45
While I'm a liberal Democrat, I'm also against these wars, and I congratulation you on this piece. And yes, we need to start putting Americans first.BY Liberal on 11/19/2009 at 08:31
If only @Sheri knew—that"The war is doing about as excellent a job at keeping us safe as the stimulus has at 'fixing' the economy" is a shame. With America the world is not safe lady.
