Bush Administration's Talks with Iran is a Necessity

By Minn. Dem. Rep. Betty McCollum
It is absolutely necessary for the U.S. to engage in a direct dialogue with Iran. Secretary Rice's willingness to move forward with talks with Iran is a move in the right direction at the right time. I hope that the Bush Administration, along with our European allies and Iran's leadership, can agree on a formula for talks to end the current impasse. Now is the time to use preventive diplomacy to ensure that Iran develops nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes and not for weapons of war.

Paulson Needs to Continue Progress Made by Snow

By Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley
Secretary Snow got a lot done as head of the Treasury Department. He was determined to help create jobs and expand our economy. His successor needs to have that same kind of determination, along with a strong sense of tax policy, capital markets, international trade, and currency policy. I look forward to getting to know Henry Paulson through his hearing in the Senate Finance Committee.

Bush Needs To Stop Compromising Science for Politics

By Wis. Dem. Rep. Tammy Baldwin
Whether it's stem cell research, contraception, or global warming, this Administration lets politics trump science at the drop of a hat, without regard for the integrity of the scientific process and without regard to the safety of our nation's public health. This is unacceptable.

Bush Out Of Step With Republicans On Housing

By Ala. Dem. Rep. Artur Davis
This bill, H.R.5083, takes an important step toward reforming the section 515 rural housing program. The bi-partisan support of this bill should send a signal to the Bush Administration, which proposed no additional funding whatsoever to section 515. Once again, this administration is at odds with its own party over housing priorities.

Mythic Arms Race Will Not Solve Iranian Nuclear Issue

By Ohio Dem. Rep. Dennis Kucinich

The Administration's plan for a National Missile Defense in Europe is nothing more than deploying an expensive myth in the absence of true international cooperation.

National Missile Defense (NMD) has a well documented record of failure. Despite over twenty years worth of research and development, and hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer money wasted, no NMD system has successfully completed a live-fire test.

The only people who benefit from this taxpayer funded boondoggle are the defense contractors who continue to line their pockets with taxpayer funds without producing a successful live-fire test.

Missile defense has failed in America, and it will fail in Europe.

Only international diplomacy, in which the United States participates, will resolve our stand off with Iran. A new arms race in Europe will not deter Iran from pursuing nuclear technologies, and is just the latest example of this Administration's failed foreign policy that makes our country less, not more, secure.

New Poll Numbers Promising and Troublesome for Bush

By Dick Morris
The latest Fox News poll shows 29% of people saying gas prices were the major issue as opposed to only 13% that mentioned Iraq.  Iraq is fading as the most important issue.  An opportunity for Bush the president and a danger for Bush the oilman.

NSA Program Is Deterring Attacks, Hayden Deserves Medal

By Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn
General Hayden deserves a medal for what he has done to make America safer, particularly with regard to his service at the National Security Agency and the terrorist surveillance program which is designed to detect and deter terrorist attacks. The problem is I think he's been criticized by some who would literally try to undermine that important program, and I couldn't believe the kinds of questions he was being asked to disclose classified information so our enemies could know more about what we're doing and avoid detection. And obviously the deterrence is an important part of that.

Bush Administration is Misleading America on Deficit Reduction

By N.D. Dem. Sen. Kent Conrad
The Bush administration’s claim that it will cut the deficit in half by 2009 is the wrong goal. It misleads the American public by suggesting the nation’s budget outlook is improving. The fact is the President’s fiscal policies are making the long-term budget outlook worse, not better.

While the administration claims the deficit is coming down, it leaves out large costs from its outyear projections, such as realistic ongoing war costs, the cost of AMT reform beyond this year, and the long-term costs of making the President’s tax cuts permanent, especially the recently passed, back-loaded expansion of Roth IRAs. When these costs are added in, the deficit explodes.

Bush's Immigration Policy Possible Deja Vu of Iraq

By Texas Dem. Rep. Silvestre Reyes
If nothing else, the President's speech was good political theater. I am more than a little concerned that this was a quickly orchestrated plan thrown together solely to provide political cover. It had better not be a repetition of the Administration's post-conflict Iraq plan. Both situations are much too dangerous and serious to be planned with such little foresight.
