EPA Finally Must Regulate Greenhouse Gas Emissions

By Del. Dem. Sen. Tom Carper
Now the highest court in the land has joined with citizens, states, businesses and scientists to call upon this Administration to move quickly to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

I urge this Administration to quickly respond to the court’s ruling by providing leadership, not excuses, and to begin to develop an action plan to finally combat global warming.

As chairman of the Senate’s clean air subcommittee, I will work hard to ensure the Environmental Protection Agency implements new standards that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases polluting our atmosphere.

It's Time for NASA's IG to Go

By Fla. Dem. Sen. Bill Nelson
I believe the report just issued by the president’s Integrity Council on the NASA inspector general Robert Cobb shows he abused his authority and maintained too close a relationship with a NASA political appointee he should have been scrutinizing. I had many complaints about Mr. Cobb over the past two years that I forwarded to the proper authorities for investigation. And where there was smoke, the report says, there was fire. It’s time for this guy to go.

Romney Pulled out Stops to Stop Tax Hike

By The Hill
Mitt Romney says he, as governor of Massachusetts, had the state's Department of Revenue send bills to residents for a proposed retroactive tax hike. In this video, Romney relates the story of how he kept Massachusetts' overwhelmingly liberal legislature from raising taxes and replaced the proposed $25 million hike with a $25 million refund.

"We simply can't afford, for our future growth as a country, to have a tax rate that's way out of alignment with the other major economies of the world," Romney told The Club for Growth March 29, citing U.S. corporate tax rates as the world's second highest.

Mass. v. EPA Decision is a Step in Right Direction

By Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers CEO Dave McCurdy
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers believes that there needs to be a national, federal, economy-wide approach to addressing greenhouse gases. This decision says that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will be part of this process.

The Alliance looks forward to working constructively with both Congress and the administration, including EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in developing a national approach.

Defense Earmarks Abound in Nevada

By Taxpayers for Common Sense
As reported by the Wall Street Journal last week, then Congressman and current Governor of Nevada Jim Gibbons (R) directed at least $2 million in federal earmarks to Sparks, NV-based Sierra Nevada Corporation while his wife, Dawn Gibbons, was on the firm’s payroll.

According to federal disclosure forms, Sierra Nevada, a hi-tech defense firm, paid Dawn Gibbons at least $35,000. During that time, the Congressman directed a $2 million earmark to the company for the Helicopter Autonomous Landing System (HALS), a safe landing system for helicopter aircrews during “brownouts Read more...

We Should Protect Digital Privacy

By Vt. Dem. Sen. Patrick Leahy
The TJX data breach now looks to be the biggest theft of personal data in our history -- affecting 47.5 million credit and debit card accounts, at the latest count.

When it comes to protecting Americans’ privacy, what we have today are analog rules in a digital world. Meanwhile, digital technology marches briskly on at light speed, leaving us all the more overdue in catching up to the erosion of privacy. It may be tempting just to throw up our hands in frustration and assume it’s too late to do anything about drawing lines to protect Americans’ privacy. But in fact it’s not too late.

Sen. Specter (R-Pa.) and I have worked on a good data privacy bill that was reported by the Committee two years ago but never taken up by the Senate. Our Personal Data Privacy and Security Act would establish stronger penalties to deter identity theft and requires companies to notify individuals when their information has been compromised. Crimes Against the Elderly Must Not Go Unnoticed

By N.Y. GOP Rep. Pete King
Elder abuse, neglect and exploitation are alarming issues that must be addressed by Congress. The Elder Justice Act (H.R. 1783) will provide the federal resources that are needed to prevent and prosecute this increasing form of abuse.  That is why I am proud to stand with a bipartisan coalition to introduce this measure. Working with my colleagues and the Elder Justice Coalition, I am confident that we can enact this legislation which will help protect the security and rights of our nation's seniors.

Why We Need to Take Colorectal Cancer Seriously

By Texas GOP Rep. Kay Granger
Colorectal Cancer should not be the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., especially not when screenings could help prevent about 30,000 to 44,000 deaths a year.

I am proud to be introducing this common sense bill that will help save so many lives, and prevent the needless loss of so many others. It’s my hope that my colleagues will share this concern and we will be able to rapidly pass this legislation so more individuals can beat this horrendous cancer in the future.

Tax Credit Protects American Agriculture

By Ky. GOP Rep. Ron Lewis
The Agricultural Business Security Tax Credit Act (H.R. 1814), will provide tax incentives for agricultural businesses to enhance security where agricultural chemicals and fertilizers are manufactured, transported, and stored.

Farm-use chemical production is unique in its use, distribution and security needs. Pesticides and fertilizers, while important to farmers and agricultural businesses, can also be used as agents for manufacturing illegal drugs such as methamphetamines. Some chemicals can even be used to develop explosive devices, making these sites a potential target for foreign and domestic terrorists.

My bill will allow agribusiness to offset security-related expenses, providing a tax credit equivalent to 30% of the aggregate amount paid on implementing new security measures, up to $100,000 per facility. This tax credit will help to defray the high costs agricultural businesses now face enhancing on-site security. This is an important step in our united efforts to better protect U.S agriculture and the American public from the potential threats and other illegal activity.

Obama Outlines His Vision

By The Hill
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), in his most recent presidential campaign video, stumped before a swarm of supporters in Oakland, Calif. Obama outlined the vision of his campaign to an estimated 12,000 people in attendance.

"It's time to create the kind of politics that's not based on religion, not based on hatred, not based on fear, but its based on hope," Obama said. "That is the kind of politics that we expect to create in this election."
