Repealing the Death Tax

By Idaho GOP Rep. C.L. Otter
I'd like to see us pass the permanent tax repeal package - whether it's a compromise between the House and Senate or not.  I don't know what they're going to hold until after the elections, but the agenda will change depending on what happens in the elections.

Recess Priorities

By DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen
Our #1 priority is to make sure during the August recess that the many good candidates we have running aren't carpet-bombed by GOP attacks. We have a whole plate of business that Congress can be working on.  I'm not optimistic that in the month of September we will move forward on these important issues.  We haven't moved forward on the minimum wage, the energy package is weighted toward oil and gas companies.  I'd like to move forward but I don't have a whole lot of confidence that the Republican Congress would.

Democrats Are Trivializing National Security

By N.C. GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry
I was outraged when I saw that the DSCC released a video titled "Feel Safer?," intending to highlight the "gap between the GOP rhetoric and the GOP record on security."  It reminded me of when the DCCC released a fundraising video depicting flag-draped coffins and invoking 9/11, which they later pulled after Republicans and Democrats called for it to be taken down.

In this time of terrorist plots by Islamic extremists, the Democrats trivialize our national security.  They think this is a game.

Last week, America's counterterrorism efforts thwarted a plan to detonate passenger planes in mid-air across the U.S.  I encourage the Democrats to continue releasing these videos, which contradict national headlines and demonstrate their loose grip on reality.  With our nation in a war against Islamic extremists, it's good for the American people to consider 'WWPD' - 'What Would Pelosi Do?'

Congressional Priorities

By Fla. Dem. Rep. Alcee Hastings
If I had my druthers, I would pass a minimum wage law and a meaningful and comprehensive energy bill with CAFE standards so that we could impact the cost of gasoline.  I also wouldn't dare go home without insuring America's children.

re: Post-Recess Priorities

By Mass. Dem. Rep. Barney Frank
I'd like to get a GSE bill through and get affordable housing that way.  There's a good bill to protect rural housing and I want to reform the housing voucher program.  As someone who represents a fishing district, I'd like to see improvements on the Magnuson Act for a bill that protects fish stock but allows for flexibility.

Iowa State Fair Is the Place to Be for Potential Candidates

By Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley
The Iowa State Fair attracts thousands and thousands of people every year.  From the butter cow to the famous ‘fair’ foods, it is the place to go in August. This year you’ll often find several of my Senate colleagues in Des Moines, as well as others who are testing the waters for a presidential run.

This is a great opportunity for potential candidates to meet with Iowans.  There aren’t many other places where you’ll find 130,000 potential caucus attendees for these new fair-goers to talk with and experience one of Iowa’s most treasured events.

Apologists for Immorality

By Arab American Institute President Dr. James Zogby
There appears to be a direct relationship between the increasing ugliness and immorality of this war and the extreme lengths to which Israel’s supporters will go to justify it.

This was brought home to me this week in three separate debates, one in print, two on television. What I clearly saw at work in these exchanges was how Israel’s apologists use verbal overkill paralleling Israel’s use of overwhelming military force. They will admit no wrong.  They attempt to bully opponents into submission.  They deny history and morality.  And, maybe most disturbing of all, they seek to present this war (as they have sought to present many of Israel’s previous wars) in exaggerated and near apocalyptical terms.

One of my antagonists, Abe Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League, objected to a piece I had written charging the Bush Administration with “criminal negligence, Read more...

Castro's Birthday Is No Cause for Celebration

By Fla. GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
On the occasion of Fidel Castro’s 80th birthday, let us remember that he has been a ruthless dictator for nearly 50 years. He is also the one person to stand between Cuba and liberty. For too long, the words “Cuba

Nebraskans Grow Tired Of Negative Advertising

By Neb. Dem. Sen. Ben Nelson
Last Friday my opponent and I met in the first of our debates. My opponent has spent $4.7 million to win the Republican Primary, nearly another $1 million attacking me since May, and on Friday dumped another $1.7 million into his campaign.

Nebraskans tell me they are sick and tired of the negative attack ads that are running on every station during every commercial break. That’s why, during the debate on Friday, I offered an advertising truce, whereby my opponent and I would discontinue all advertising – negative and positive – until October 1. My opponent rejected the offer immediately. Only later did we learn about his personal contribution of another $1.75 million.

On Sunday, in West Point, Nebraska I had some folks come up to me and thank me for trying to stop the advertisements. I told them I’d be happy to stop mine if my opponent would stop his ads but unilaterally disarming would be a mistake.

Many of my ads and those run on my behalf have focused on my record of cutting taxes and spending, promoting ethanol, strengthening our national security, and stressing my record of putting Nebraska first. I will continue to run ads touting my record in the months ahead.

America Needs Bipartisan Bridge Builders

By Colo. GOP Candidate for Congress Rick O'Donnell
We need creative and constructive bridge builders in Congress who will set aside petty partisanship and work day and night to expand opportunity in America. We deserve a secure and prosperous nation and not to become the France of the 21st Century!
I have a successful record as a bi-partisan reformer in Colorado. With your support I will bring new ideas to tackle and solve the challenges facing America.
