Obama confirms Iran has US spy drone

By John T. Bennett - 12/12/11 01:50 PM ET

President Obama on Monday appeared to confirm that Iran has in its possession a secret U.S. spy drone.

"I'm not going to comment on intelligence matters that are classified," Obama said during a Monday press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki. "We have asked for it back. We’ll see how the Iranians respond."

Earlier this month, Tehran said one of its electronic warfare units took down an RQ-170 American spy drone. Iranian television broadcast pictures of an unmanned plane, saying it was the U.S. RQ-170.

Pentagon and Obama administration officials previously had only said such a drone went missing after a mission in western Afghanistan, near the Iran border.
