Nominee would be first female Air Force four-star general

By Jeremy Herb - 02/07/12 11:14 AM ET

President Obama nominated Lt. Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger on Monday to become the Air Force’s first female four-star general.

If confirmed by the Senate, Wolfenbarger would become commander, Air Force Material Command, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Wolfenbarger, who graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado in 1980, was previously vice commander at Wright-Patterson.

Currently, she is working at the Pentagon as military deputy in the office of the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition.

Wolfenbarger would become just the second female four-star general in the U.S. military. The first came in the Army, when Gen. Ann Dunwoody was promoted to four-star general in 2008.
