Report: Israel teams with Iranian terror group in assassinations

By Jeremy Herb - 02/09/12 11:57 AM ET

Assassinations on Iranian nuclear scientists are being carried out by an Iranian dissident group aided by Israel, according to U.S. officials, NBC News reported.

The group that’s assassinating Iranian scientists, the People’s Mujahedin of Iran, also known as MEK, is designated as a terrorist group by the U.S. State Department.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused both Israel and the United States of being behind the attacks, the latest of which occurred last month when a motorcyclist strapped a bomb on a scientist’s car.

The report quoted U.S. officials as saying the Obama administration is aware of the assassination campaign but does not have any involvement.

Mohammad Javad Larijani, a senior aide to Khamenei, told NBC that Israel’s secret service, the Mossad, is training and paying members of the Iranian dissident group.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry declined comment, saying in a statement: "As long as we can't see all the evidence being claimed by NBC, the Foreign Ministry won't react to every gossip and report being published worldwide."

MEK released a statement last month saying that its involvement is “absolutely false.

Last month’s assassination, the fifth Iranian scientist killed since 2007, further enflamed tensions between Iran and the West, as the United States and its allies seek to stop Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons and Iran has threatened to retaliate against economic sanctions and any potential military action.
