Gen. Dempsey: Video of alleged USMC misconduct 'erodes' military's reputation

By John T. Bennett - 01/12/12 03:50 PM ET

The top U.S. general on Thursday joined other military leaders in condemning a video that appears to show American Marines urinating on Taliban corpses.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos issued separate statements earlier Thursday slamming the incidents and ordering probes into what happened.

Hours later, Dempsey said in a statement he was “deeply disturbed by the actions in this video."

“Actions like those are not only illegal but are contrary to the values of a professional military and serve to erode the reputation of our joint force,” Dempsey said. “The Marine Corps has asked [the Naval Criminal Investigative Service] for a thorough investigation, and I am confident that there will be accountability, as appropriate.”

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai also condemned the incident on Thursday.
