Ex-Marine charged in deaths of four LA homeless men

By Jeremy Herb - 01/17/12 05:02 PM ET

An ex-Marine who served in Iraq was charged Tuesday with the serial killing of four homeless men near Los Angeles.

The Orange County district attorney charged Itzcoatl "Izzy" Ocampo with four counts of murder Tuesday, accusing him of plotting out his killings and planning future ones, according to local media reports. Ocampo was arrested Friday.

In a profile of Ocampo, The Orange Country Register wrote that relatives and friends of the suspect described a change in personality after Ocampo left the Marines. He was deployed to Iraq in 2008, and while he didn’t see combat, his job involved securing and inspecting wounded soldiers and bagging up bodies.

He was devastated after his best friend was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

Ocampo’s father, Refugio Ocampo, who is homeless himself, told the Register that his son had always been generous toward homeless people he encountered, even as his family struggled.
