Obama taps two generals for new posts
President Obama nominated two generals for promotions on Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced at a press briefing.
The administration has tapped Army Gen. David Rodriguez to take over as head of U.S. Africa Command, and Marine Lt. Gen. John Paxton to become assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.
Both moves must be confirmed by the Senate.
Rodriguez would replace Gen. Carter Ham at the helm of Africa Command, after Carter ran the command since March 2011. Rodriguez is currently commanding general of U.S. Army Forces Command, and previously led the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command in Afghanistan.
Dunford is replacing Gen. John Allen as ISAF commander, as Allen was nominated as commander of U.S. European Command and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
All of the nominations require Senate confirmation, but none is expected to be controversial.
