SEAL foundation rejects proceeds from bin Laden book

By Jeremy Herb - 09/06/12 09:44 AM ET

A foundation that provides support for Navy SEALs and their families said it does not want any of the proceeds from a new book that details the SEAL raid on Osama bin Laden.

The Navy SEAL Foundation said on its website Wednesday that it would not accept any proceeds from the book, No Easy Day, which was released Tuesday and is atop the best-seller charts.

“The Navy SEAL Foundation is committed to providing immediate and ongoing support and assistance to the Naval Special Warfare community and their families,” the foundation said in a statement. “With this principled mission in mind, the Foundation will not be accepting any donations that are generated from the book or any related activities.”

The decision by the Navy SEAL Foundation to reject the potential source of funding highlights the tensions within the typically tight-lipped SEAL community about a tell-all book that delivers a blow-by-blow account of the SEALs' most famous mission.

The Pentagon said this week that the book contains “sensitive and classified” information, and the Obama administration is threatening legal action against its author, an ex-SEAL who wrote under the pseudonym Mark Owen.

The author’s attorney responded that the book was properly vetted, and that Owen did not reveal classified information or break a non-disclosure agreement that he signed.

The author said that he is donating a majority of his book proceeds to charity.

Another charity that focuses on Navy SEALs that was listed in the book, the All in All the Time Foundation, has not yet decided how it should handle any potential funds coming from the tome, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

Christina Valentine, who founded the group after her husband died in a parachuting accident in 2008, told the Pilot, “I need to sit here and really mull it over.

"I don't want to judge anybody or make an uninformed comment,” she said. “I wonder how many people out there haven't read the book and are making a statement?"
