Pentagon investigating after Navy submarine, cruiser collide

By Jeremy Herb - 10/15/12 11:54 AM ET

The Pentagon is investigating a collision that occurred this weekend between a Navy submarine and Aegis cruiser.

Both ships were able to return to port under their own power on Sunday, and there were no injuries in the incident, U.S. Fleet Forces Command said in a release.

The crash occurred at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when the Los Angeles-class USS Montpelier submarine and USS San Jacinto, a Ticonderoga-class cruiser, collided during a training exercise.

Fleet Forces said the damage to both ships is being evaluated, but the propulsion plant of the submarine was not damaged in the collision.

The ships were being evaluated for damages after returning to port Sunday. The USS Montpelier docked in Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia and the USS San Jacinto arrived in Naval Station Mayport in Florida.
