Rep. Berman bill would give Israel more missile defense support
Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), who is locked in a member-versus-member primary battle with Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.), introduced legislation Tuesday that would allow the Obama administration to give more missile defense systems to Israel.
Berman’s bill would allow the United States to provide more Iron Dome missile defense systems to Israel if the Israeli government requested it. Israel currently has three Iron Dome systems deployed, and Berman said more are needed to secure the country’s borders.
Berman, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has pushed a number of pro-Israeli measures, including an extension of an Israeli loan guarantee program and further sanctions against Iran.
Berman and Sherman, both Jews, were redistricted into the same district in Southern California. One pro-Israeli political action committee, the Washington PAC, donated the maximum to both campaigns this election cycle.
“This is the only time in our 30-year history that we are contributing to both sides of a race, since both candidates deserve it,” the PAC wrote in the invitation for Berman’s fundraiser.
