Report: FBI still not on scene in Benghazi
FBI agents tasked with investigating the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi have still not arrived in the city or secured the crime scene, according to a report from CNN.
CNN reported that the FBI was in Tripoli, but had not been given permission to go to Benghazi, where U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed two weeks ago.
"The senior law enforcement official I spoke to said, 'If we get there now, it's not clear that it will be of any use to us,' " said Fran Townsend, a CNN national security analyst.
The FBI team has conducted interviews with State Department and other U.S. officials in Libya during the attack, according to Townsend, but the FBI was denied access to those in Libyan custody.
Eight House GOP committee chairmen wrote a letter to President Obama specifically questioning sending the FBI to Libya to investigate the attack.
“Although brave Americans were once more murdered by terrorists, it seems our response is to rely on a late-to-the-scene FBI investigation,” the Republican lawmakers wrote.
Republicans have said the attack appeared to have been premeditated, but the Obama administration said there’s no evidence to suggest that was the case.
A report in the Daily Beast Wednesday said that U.S. officials knew it was a terrorist attack within 24 hours, citing intelligence officials.
