Retired general to serve as chairman of Dover review panel

By John T. Bennett - 11/21/11 09:59 PM ET

The Pentagon announced late Monday that retired Army Gen. John Abizaid, a former U.S. Central Command chief, will serve as chairman of a panel tasked with probing the mishandling of fallen American soldiers remains.

Abizaid brings to this task a wealth of military experience and leadership, spanning the course of his more than three decades in the United States Army, Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said in a news release.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said earlier this month that he has asked an independent panel to review mismanagement of the deceased soldiers remains at Port Mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware because a probe already completed by the Air Force Office of Special Counsel raised “additional questions” that must be answered.

Pentagon brass want to “make sure we have taken every step to give” the affected military families “peace of mind,” Panetta said Nov. 10.
