Bachmann would deploy missiles, use blockade against Iran

By John T. Bennett - 01/02/12 11:11 AM ET

Longshot GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann warned Iran on Monday that she would place more U.S. missiles in the region and set up a blockade in an effort to dissuade Tehran from continuing its nuclear weapons program.

The Minnesota congresswoman said during a CBS News interview that she would deploy Patriot missile batteries, ballistic missiles and other American combat systems to send this message to Iran: halt your nuclear arms program.

She also would place U.S. missile systems in the Middle East on alert.

“We will do whatever it takes," Bachmann said.

Her comments came just days after new tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iran last week threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil passageway; the U.S. responded by sending an aircraft carrier strike group through the strait.

Bachmann received support from only 8 percent of GOP voters in Iowa in the latest Public Policy Polling poll released Monday night, leading only former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer. In Saturday’s Des Moines Register poll Bachmann received support from 7 percent of those surveyed.

Bachmann though insists that her campaign will continue in New Hampshire regardless of how she finishes in Tuesday’s Iowa caucus vote.
