Romney takes swipe at Obama over new defense strategy

By John T. Bennett - 01/10/12 10:12 PM ET

A euphoric Mitt Romney celebrated his win in the New Hampshire GOP presidential primary by vowing to build an American military the world will fear.

President Obama last week announced a new defense strategy that envisions a smaller, leaner and more agile military.

The revised strategy was necessary after the Budget Control Act mandated $350 billion in defense cuts over a decade. The Pentagon says that will mean an actual cut of more than $480 billion over 10 years.

Romney said Obama wants to end America's military might.

"Internationally, President Obama has adopted an appeasement strategy," the former governor of Massachusetts said during his victory speech Tuesday evening. "He believes America’s role as leader in the world is a thing of the past. I believe a strong America must – and will – lead the future."

Romney vowed to build a U.S. military so lethal no other nation would even "think of challenging it."

For the military's part, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey said Thursday the military would have changed without budget cuts after the Iraq war and the war in Afghanistan on pace to end in a few years.
