Protests planned at White House for 10-year Guantanamo anniversary
Human-rights groups are planning protests in Washington and internationally to mark the 10th anniversary of the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.
Several groups, including Amnesty International, Witness Against Torture, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, are planning to gather outside the White House at noon Wednesday.
The groups are planning a rally in Lafayette Park and then a march to the Capitol.
Prisoners at Guantanamo also are planning protests on the prison’s 10th anniversary. Lawyers for Guantanamo detainees told The Washington Post that the protesters had informed guards they would be refusing food for three days and would attempt to sleep in recreation areas.
Prisoners at Guantanamo protested in similar fashion on last year’s anniversary.
