Rep. Wolf continues push for study group on Afghanistan and Pakistan

By Jeremy Herb - 01/17/12 03:52 PM ET

Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) continued his quest for an Afghanistan-Pakistan study group Tuesday, writing to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to establish the group with $1 million that was included in the 2012 appropriations bill.

Wolf’s Tuesday letter is the sixth he’s sent in the past seven months to Panetta on the issue, in addition to three letters to President Obama in 2010 and 2011.

Wolf wants the independent panel to study U.S. strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan in a similar model to the Iraq Study Group, which Wolf had first proposed.

Wolf added an amendment to the House defense appropriations bill that provided $1 million for the study group. He said in the letter Tuesday that Panetta should quickly set up the panel now that the money is there for it.

Before he was Defense secretary, Panetta served on the Iraq Study Group, which released its report in 2006.
