Panetta, Dempsey to brief Congress on sexual assault
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey are going to Capitol Hill on Monday to talk sexual assault with members of Congress, according to an invitation for the event.
The closed-door meeting with members at 5 p.m. Monday is being hosted by Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), who chairs the Caucus on Women and the Military, and Reps. Michael Turner (R-Ohio) and Niki Tsongas (D-Mass.), who co-chair the Military Sexual Assault Prevention Caucus.
In January, Panetta pledged to do more to reduce the number of sexual assaults in the military.
The Defense Department estimated last year there were 19,000 military sexual assaults. There were 3,191 reported incidences of sexual assault in 2011.
The Pentagon’s creation of a centralized case-level database for sexual assault, which is supposed to be fully operational by August 2012, drew praise from two members of Congress on Monday.
