Ahmadinejad mocks Romney over Israel trip

By Jeremy Herb - 07/31/12 11:18 AM ET

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad poked fun at presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney after his visit to Israel, saying in a speech that Romney was “kissing the foot” of Israel.

Speaking on Iranian state television, Ahmadinejad went after Romney, though he did not mention the presidential candidate by name, the Associated Press reported.

Ahmadinejad asked why Romney would make “concessions to get some pennies for (his) campaign?” according to the AP.

Romney said in Israel that he would “respect” Israel’s decision to defend itself and attack Iran over its nuclear weapons program. While Romney is not criticizing President Obama during his trip overseas, he has previously attacked Obama for not taking a strong enough stance toward Tehran.

On his trip, Romney said that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, something that most countries, including the United States, do not recognize. He also said he would move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Romney’s comments about Israel come as Republicans look to chip away in November at Jewish voters who typically lean Democratic.
