The Topline: The odds on former Sen. Chuck Hagel’s (R-Neb.) confirmation went up significantly in the last 24 hours, as Hagel won endorsements from Sens. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).
The big one, of course, was Schumer, the Senate’s No. 3 Democrat and leading Jewish voice. Schumer was seen as a pivotal vote if Hagel was going to be confirmed as President Obama’s next Defense secretary, and his vote of support Tuesday means the White House won’t have to sweat the confirmation hearing nearly as much.
Schumer also urged other lawmakers who have expressed similar concerns about his positions and statements on Israel and Iran to support Obama’s nominee.
“Based on several key assurances provided by Senator Hagel, I am currently prepared to vote for his confirmation,” Schumer said in a statement. “I encourage my Senate colleagues who have shared my previous concerns to also support him. In our meeting Monday, Senator Hagel clarified a number of his past statements and positions and elaborated on several others,” Schumer said.
Hagel is not totally out of the woods and into the Pentagon yet, as he has to get through his confirmation hearing, and new, unflattering information could still always potentially emerge.
But the support of most Democrats will likely follow Schumer’s endorsement, just as he could have potentially derailed the Hagel nomination had he come out against the former Nebraska senator.
