Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan are discussing alternatives to the six-point peace plan for Syria. Annan revealed the discussions Friday before heading into a meeting with Clinton at the State Department. The meeting comes after Annan on Thursday urged the United Nations to ramp up the pressure on Syria following a massacre that western nations are blaming on the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad.

The Topline: As the
Senate left town for the week Thursday, the White House gave Sen. John McCain
(R-Ariz.) and other Republicans an answer that’s unlikely to stop their
increasingly loud chatter about national security leaks in the Obama
administration. The White House rejected
a call from the GOP for a special counsel to investigate the leaks, which
have drawn condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans after news of a
U.S. cyberattack against Iran was published in The New York Times last week.
“No,” was press secretary Jay Carney’s one-word response to
a question about the special counsel during a press gaggle on Air Force One,
before saying that President Obama “takes this very seriously.”
