Services echo Panetta on threat of sequestration cuts

By Jeremy Herb

Echoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, leaders of the Army, Navy and Marines outlined the devastation that an additional $500 billion in automatic cuts through sequestration would have on the military at budget hearings this week.

The services said in House hearings Thursday and Friday that sequestration would hollow out the force, urging the cuts be undone before they take effect in January 2013.

The Pentagon is cutting $487 billion over the next decade as a result of the August debt-limit deal, but defense spending also faces an additional $500 billion in across-the-board cuts through sequestration, which were enacted after the supercommittee failed to find $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction.

Forbes said Thursday that Congress is also to blame when it comes to cuts to Defense. He said that leadership in Congress “put these blinders on” as they agreed to the August debt deal that led to $487 billion in Pentagon cuts and the potential for an additional $500 billion in cuts if sequestration takes effect in January 2013.
