The week ahead: Top commander to brief Congress on Afghanistan

The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan will try to assuage lawmakers’ concerns this week after a rocky period for American and coalition forces in the country.

Gen. John Allen and Defense Department policy Undersecretary James Allen will appear before the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, and its Senate counterpart on Thursday.

Allen and Central Command chief Gen. James Mattis will testify Wednesday before the House Appropriations subcommittee on Defense.

Former Biden security adviser to join Obama's staff

Brad McKeon, a former national security adviser for Vice President Biden, will serve as a national security adviser to President Obama, the White House announced Friday. 

McKeon will be the deputy assistant to the President and executive secretary and also chief of staff of the National Security staff. McKeon's new job was previously held by Nate Tibbits.
