The parents of certain deceased veterans will soon be allowed to be buried in national cemeteries.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will allow "biological or legally adoptive parents" to be interred "if the deceased veteran is a hostile casualty or dies from a training-related injury," states the Federal Register's final rule, to be published Tuesday.
"[R]ecognizing the unique burden on the surviving parents of fallen service members, the act provides burial eligibility to those parents whose unmarried veteran son or daughter dies due to combat or training-related injuries," the pre-published final rule says.
The action implements part of the Veterans Benefits Act of 2010 that was "enacted" on Oct. 13, 2010. The department also clarifies that "by limiting the circumstances under which a parent is eligible for burial," the act will ensure that "gravesites [will] not be taken from those who have earned the right to burial in a national cemetery by serving their country."

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) last week criticized Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, for making comments that Rohrabacher said imply that Congress should not be holding open discussions about how best to structure Afghanistan's fledgling government. Rohrabacher was responding to comments crocker made on Jan. 24, when he said rumors that the United States has a plan to change Afghanistan's form of government are "lies that dishonor the sacrifice of more than 1,800 American service members who have died in the cause of a unified Afghanistan."

The political fallout from the Pentagon’s plan to cut $487
billion will come into focus this week as lawmakers in both chambers return to
legislative business.
Congressional sources said the House Armed Services
Committee will hold a classified briefing with Pentagon officials this week, a
session that is held every year as the committee gears up for work on
a defense authorization bill.
This year, the briefing is likely to be anything but
routine.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz said Friday
that the Air Force will also see a reduction in manpower of about 10,000 over
the next five years as the Pentagon trims its budget. That reduction is smaller than the cut of 80,000 Army troops
and 20,000 Marines, which were announced by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta
Thursday.
Schwartz said that the reduction in airmen is not being done
“in order to meet budget targets.”
