Liberal Dem: White House, Hill need climate strategy
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said Thursday that better coordination between the White House and lawmakers is needed to advance global warming legislation.
His comments come as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) appears set to delay action on a power plant-focused climate change measure until after the August break.
More broadly, advocates of carbon caps have thus far failed to garner the political traction needed to win 60 Senate votes.
While cautioning that near-term Senate plans are unclear and he doesn’t want to “talk down” Senate prospects, Whitehouse said, “I do think that if the White House and the Senate and the House would get together on a strategy, then we could do a strong bill.”
“If the White House and the Senate and the environmental community and the green energy community were all prepared to work together on a strong bill, it would happen,” he later added.
