Green group targets Tea Partier O'Donnell

By Darren Goode - 10/05/10 11:55 AM ET

The League of Conservation Voters added Delaware Republican Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell to its list of “Dirty Dozen” candidates targeted for defeat in November.

Green groups are growing more aggressive in the remaining weeks of the campaign to stave off expected Republican gains, particularly by Tea Party candidates such as O’Donnell who have questioned the science behind climate change and the need to address the issue.

The LCV last week added to its Dirty Dozen list Sharron Angle, who is trying to topple Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.); Sen. Russ Feingold's (D-Wis.) Republican challenger, Ron Johnson; and Ken Buck, who is challenging Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.).

The group typically uses the list to target tight races where the group's involvement ideally would make a difference.

O’Donnell is running well behind. A FoxNews poll conducted Sept. 18 had the Democratic nominee, Chris Coons, leading her by 15 percent, with 60 percent of those polled saying O’Donnell is not qualified to be a U.S. senator.

Others on the LCV’s list are Republican Senate candidates Roy Blunt (Mo.), Pat Toomey (Pa.) and Carly Fiorina (Calif.); Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.); and Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn.) and former GOP Reps. Tim Walberg (Mich.) and Steve Pearce (N.M.).
