Gulf oil spill features in children's book series

By Andrew Restuccia - 12/27/10 03:20 PM ET

One of the country's worst environmental disasters has been turned into a children's book.

Mobile's Press-Register reports that four Alabama women have authored a series of children's books based on the Gulf oil spill.

"There’s Sandcastle Sally, Jet Ski Jimmy, Angler Andy, Marine Biology Buff Bobby, just some of the characters in the new children’s book series, 'The Boat House Buddies Deal With the Big Spill,' " the Press-Register says.

"Co-authored by four women who live in Baldwin County, the books are intended to entertain and instruct young readers on matters pertaining to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill."

The books focus on children's role in the Gulf's economic recovery.

"[Ilene Baskette, a co-author of the books] said that, for all the information pouring out about the spill and its aftermath — 'environment recovery and economic recovery,' she said — there has been little directed at children," the Press-Register reports.
