Obama signs two energy/environment bills into law

By Andrew Restuccia - 01/05/11 10:17 AM ET

President Obama on Tuesday night signed into law two bills that E2 readers might care about.

The first, the Shark Conservation Act, closes a number of loopholes in the United States’ current ban on shark finning. Shark finning, in which shark fins are chopped off and sold, has become a lucrative business, spurred in part by the growing demand for shark fin soup.

The legislation was sponsored by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Del. Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam).

The second, the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, reauthorizes a program that retrofits diesel engines so they release fewer harmful emissions. The bill was sponsored by Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and George Voinovich (R-Ohio).
