Musician Dave Matthews to advocate for land conservation

By Andrew Restuccia - 03/22/11 12:51 PM ET

Dave Matthews, the hugely popular singer/songwriter, is the face of a new campaign by the Wilderness Society, a major environmental group.

According to the Wilderness Society, Matthews will call on Congress not to slash funding for a series of conservation programs and to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, among other things.

“As a member of our Governing Council, Dave is calling on all of us to help protect some of the nation’s most beloved wild places — Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which deserves lasting protections from the threats of oil drilling, and the Alpine Lakes area of Washington’s North Cascades, a mountain gem just outside Seattle where Dave himself loves to hike and camp,” the group said.

Matthews joined the Wilderness Society’s board, known as the “Governing Council,” in 2009.

The South African musician became something of a sensation on college campuses everywhere with the 1994 release of the Dave Matthews Band’s “Under the Table and Dreaming” as well as a slew of subsequent albums.

The Wilderness Society, founded in 1935, works to protect the country’s public lands.

This post has been updated to reflect the fact that Dave Matthews has been a member of the Wilderness Society's board since 2009.
