Public health group slams Rep. Upton in his district
The American Lung Association (ALA) has plastered advertisements on four billboards in House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton's (R-Mich.) district calling on the lawmaker to abandon efforts to block Environmental Protection Agency climate regulations.
The effort is part of a broad campaign by public health and environmental groups pressure Republicans in their districts on the issue during the Congressional recess.
The ads, which feature a young girl, say, "Rep. Fred Upton, protect our kids' health. Don't Weaken the Clean Air Act." There are four ads in Upton's district, some in direct view of Upton's district offices, an ALA spokeswoman said.
Upton is heading up an effort in the House to pass legislation to prevent the EPA from regulating greenhouse-gas emissions from stationary sources such as power plants and refineries.
The bill was approved by Upton's committee earlier this month. Companion legislation, authored by Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), has been offered as an amendment to a Senate small-business package. It's unclear when the amendment will come up on the Senate floor.
Here's the advertisement.
