Wanted: Offshore drilling enforcers

By Andrew Restuccia - 04/15/11 11:40 AM ET

The Interior Department's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) is looking to hire two new officials to enforce a series of tough, new safety and environmental regulations on offshore oil-and-gas drilling and other offshore energy development.

The Environmental Enforcement Officer "will be responsible for program direction and oversight, developing new approaches to environmental inspection and enforcement and ensuring bureau decisions appropriately apply and enforce relevant laws and regulations including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act," according to BOEMRE. It's the first time such a position has been created.

Meanwhile, the Regulations Development Branch Supervisor "will be responsible for directing the national program for assessing, developing and promulgating regulations relating to oversight of offshore energy development operations," BOEMRE says.

The new hires will be a part of BOEMRE's Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). BSEE, which will officially open its doors in October, is one of two new branches of BOEMRE created by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar as part of the overhaul of the former Minerals Management Service, which came under fire in the aftermath of last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The other branch is the Bureau of Ocean Energy management, which will be responsible for issuing offshore drilling leases and overseeing five-year drilling plans, among other things. Read more about the reorganization here.
