Stormy weather forces cancellation of Michelle Obama's Earth Day event

By Andrew Restuccia - 04/22/11 01:13 PM ET

First lady Michelle Obama was scheduled to mark Earth Day with an event Friday at a park in Washington, D.C., but Mother Nature had other plans.

Rainy weather in Washington forced the White House to cancel the event Friday afternoon.

Obama was slated to meet with local schoolchildren at Fort Dupont Park to participate in a "habitat improvement project." The project was meant to "encourage youth to engage in outdoor community service projects and cultivate a commitment to creating a cleaner environment and a healthier planet," according to the White House.

Council on Environmental Quality Chairwoman Nancy Sutley and National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis were also scheduled to attend the event.

The first lady was also expected to tout her "Let's Move" campaign, a program to fight childhood obesity.
