Report: Sea levels could rise more than five feet by turn of the century
The world's oceans could rise more than five feet by the turn of the century, a new scientific report says.
Here's Reuters with more on the report:
"Such a rise — above most past scientific estimates — would add to threats to coasts from Bangladesh to Florida, low-lying Pacific islands and cities from London to Shanghai. It would also, for instance, raise costs of building tsunami barriers in Japan."
The report, by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme, blamed sea ice loss in the Arctic and Greenland for much of the rise, according to Reuters.
It's the latest in a series of reports that have warned of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
The report comes as international efforts to reach an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have hit major roadblocks and efforts to pass climate legislation in the United States have stalled.
Meanwhile, Republicans and some Democrats in Congress are pushing to delay plans by the Environmental Protection Agency to implement climate regulations. The House passed a bill to block the agency's climate rules, but the same measure failed in the Senate.
