National Taxpayers Union ads bash Dem push to nix oil tax incentives
The National Taxpayers Union is launching a $1.25 million TV and print ad campaign that alleges Democratic efforts to repeal oil industry tax incentives will lead to higher prices at the pump and increased reliance on oil imports.
“Tell President Obama: No new energy taxes,” the TV ad states (the ad can be viewed here).
The ad buy launched Wednesday features a week of spots on national cable networks, and print ads in beltway publications including The Hill, Roll Call and Politico, a spokesman for the group said.
“You’re paying more at the pump, but Obama and his allies in Congress support new energy taxes that would drive up prices even more,” states the TV ad.
It shows a picture of Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) against a backdrop of gas station signs with prices well over $4-per-gallon, a price reached in many regions.
The ad – amid images including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez – also claims that the administration is stymieing domestic oil-and-gas production, and alleges this is “costing the U.S. billions and making us more dependent on foreign oil.”
The ad buy comes as House and Senate Democrats are seeking votes on plans that would repeal several oil industry tax incentives.
Offshore drilling bills on the House floor this week could provide a venue.
While amendments to the bills may not be an option, Democrats could attempt other procedural maneuvers, such as a vote on a “motion to recommit” or other avenues that would put members on record about the tax incentives.
