Perry: Scientists are manipulating data to prove climate change
GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry questioned Wednesday whether global warming is occurring, and accused scientists of manipulating climate data.
Perry, the Republican governor of Texas, made the comments Wednesday at a campaign event in Bedford, N.H.
“I think we're seeing almost weekly or even daily scientists who are coming forward and questioning, the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change,” Perry said.
Perry said that he believes the climate is changing, but said it has been doing so “ever since the Earth was formed.”
He said proposals aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions are major burdens on the economy that will cost the public “billions, if not trillions of dollars.”
“I don't think from my perspective I want America to be engaged in spending that much money on still a scientific theory that has not been proven, and from my perspective is more and more being put into question,” Perry said.
It’s not the first time Perry has made such comments — he previously called climate change a “phony mess.”
The vast majority of the world’s scientists believe the climate is changing in large part due to human activity.
But many of the GOP candidates aren’t convinced. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), for example, has questioned whether human beings are responsible for climate change.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R), on the other hand, says climate change is real, and it is caused at least in part by human beings. But Romney says he opposes policies like cap-and-trade that are pitched as ways to reverse climate change.
