News bites: Republicans pressed DOE for clean-energy money

Top Republicans – including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) – have blasted the administration’s efforts to invest in wind and solar while at the same time lobbying for clean energy money for their home states, The New York Times reports.

Solar energy installations are up, but manufacturing is lagging in the United States, a new report says, according to the Times.

Japanese officials asked 1.2 million people to evacuate ahead of a massive typhoon, The Washington Post reports.
