News bites: US proposes tapping emergency oil reserve, French official says

A French official said the U.S. government has proposed releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Bloomberg reports.

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Interior Department will unveil a plan later Wednesday “to allow new seismic research designed to help identify hidden pockets of oil and gas in Atlantic waters along the East Coast.”

A top mining regulator said Tuesday that federal inspectors could have done more to prevent a 2010 West Virginia mine disaster that killed 29 men, according to The Huffington Post.

Keystone XL pipeline developer TransCanada Corp. has some competition, The Houston Chronicle reports.

The New York Times
reports that rising gas prices have little effect on people’s behavior.
