Warren picks up endorsement of another green group

By Andrew Restuccia - 04/23/12 12:19 PM ET

Elizabeth Warren won the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Monday in her bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.).

The news, while not a surprise, officially aligns the environmental movement's two biggest political campaign operations with Warren’s election bid. The Sierra Club, the green movement's other political powerhouse, endorsed Warren earlier this month.

“LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Elizabeth Warren for Senate because she understands that the policies needed to bring jobs to Massachusetts and keep America’s competitive edge are the same policies that will reduce our dependence on oil and curb harmful pollution,” LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski said in a statement.

“We are confident that as Senator, Elizabeth Warren will be a strong voice for environmental policies that make corporate polluters pay their fair share and build a clean energy future for America.”

Warren, a liberal Democrat, has raised concerns about the effects of climate change, called for weaning the country off its dependence on fossil fuels and advocated for increased investments in renewable energy.

She bashed Brown for voting last month against a Democrat-backed measure to repeal billions in tax breaks for the largest oil companies over the next decade.

“Our country cannot afford to continue subsidizing dirty energy sources like oil, gas, and coal,” Warren said in a statement on the LCV endorsement. “I am committed to fighting for policies that will not only make our economy more innovative, but will also protect our environment and the health of our communities.”

Though LCV officially endorsed her Monday, the group has long supported Warren’s campaign. For example, it spent $1.8 million last year on television advertisements blasting Brown’s environmental record.

The group now features Warren on its “GiveGreen” website, which allows supporters to donate to candidates supported by LCV.

Recent polls show Warren and Brown are in a dead heat.
