Bloomberg laments focus on ‘creationism’ instead of climate change

By Ben Geman - 08/08/12 10:21 AM ET

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is lamenting the lack of attention to climate change and gun control in the presidential contest while touting city-level action on the environment and other matters.

Bloomberg talks climate — and plenty more — in a frank interview with Time magazine about the fruits of his $50 million grant to the Sierra Club’s “Beyond Coal” campaign.

“Not just in the U.S. but around the world, it is the mayors who are driving the environmental agenda. At the federal level they can’t even decide if the science on climate change is good. They’re focusing on creationism while we try to create a better life for people,” Bloomberg said.

“You can’t get the two candidates to focus on guns. It’s such a disgrace. Meanwhile, mayors take on illegal guns, and fight things like trans-fats, and deal with all the problems in the air we breathe and the water we drink,” he said.

And here’s part of his response when asked about the absence of focus on climate in the 2012 White House race:

“In the presidential election, nothing seems to matter. Neither candidate — and I have been as critical towards them as anyone has been — seems willing to attack on any issue. But you can’t get away with that if you’re running on a more local level.”
