Dems hit up donors after Chevron’s GOP gift
House Democrats’ campaign arm is trying to raise money by urging donors to help counter Chevron Corp.’s $2.5 million check to a GOP super-PAC.
“This make us so angry. Big Oil is trying to drop in at the last second and buy the election for the Republicans,” the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said in a fundraising appeal Friday.
“If you want to fight Big Oil, if you want President Obama to win this election, then donate whatever you can right now,” the DCCC said.
Watchdog groups said Chevron’s $2.5 million donation this month to the Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF) was the largest by a publicly traded company since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United v. FEC decision, which removed many restrictions on corporate political spending.
The CLF supports House Republicans.
Rep. Steve Israel (D), the DCCC’s chairman, separately issued a statement claiming Chevron’s donation “may be the biggest political payoff in history.”
“House Republicans protected taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil companies making record profits and now they’re getting rewarded,” he said.
