News bites: Renewables to rival coal for electricity generation by 2035

By Zack Colman - 11/12/12 09:48 AM ET

Renewables and coal will be on a par for the top energy sources for electricity generation worldwide by 2035, according to a new, wide-ranging International Energy Agency report.

The Houston Chronicle explains that it could take years and billions of dollars of investment before any oil from drilling in Alaska’s Arctic waters reaches a refinery.

The Chronicle also suggests that a criminal investigation for BP’s 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico might be delaying civil-penalty payouts to states.

A recently tapped methane repository in Alaska could yield a significant new energy source, notes The Associated Press.
