OVERNIGHT ENERGY: Ex-Senate luminaries give Obama energy advice
STATE OF PLAY: Former Senate and administration heavyweights will offer President Obama a recipe for advancing energy policy during a Tuesday event.
The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Energy Project drafted recommendations for how the executive branch should pursue energy policy. The think tank will share those suggestions at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
Former Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), former Obama National Security Adviser retired Gen. James L. Jones and former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator William Reilly will present the blueprint.
The officials will touch on how their times in Congress and the executive branch influenced the recommendations. They also will discuss the nation’s recent energy developments and what they mean for the future.
THE REST OF TUESDAY’S AGENDA:
Booming US oil forecast in focus
Top International Energy Agency (IEA) officials will be in Washington, D.C., Tuesday to discuss their prediction that the U.S. will become the world’s top oil producer by about 2017.
The wide-ranging report covers far more than just oil production.
It also warns that the world is just a few years away from “locking in” temperature increases above 2 degrees Celsius, the threshold that scientists warn will trigger some of the most dangerous climatic changes.
Conservative group, Inhofe push to thwart EPA
The Heartland Institute and Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) will be on Capitol Hill Tuesday with a 15,000-signature petition demanding that lawmakers deeply cut the “size, power and cost of the EPA.”
Inhofe, who will appear at a Capitol Hill press conference with Heartland officials, calls global warming a “hoax” and opposes EPA climate rules.
He’s the top Republican on the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, but his tenure in that slot is winding down due to term limits for committee leaders.
Former CIA director to give keynote at solar energy conference
Policymakers and solar energy industry leaders will discuss the technology’s future in a two-day conference beginning Tuesday.
Former CIA Director R. James Woolsey will deliver the Solar Energy Focus keynote address at dinner Tuesday night.
Woolsey is a founder of both the U.S. Energy Security Council and the Set America Free Coalition, which aim to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
The conference will host panels on the military’s role in adopting solar power, innovative financing schemes and technology developments. Those sessions will take place Wednesday.
