News bites: US defends Obama on climate at UN talks

By Ben Geman - 12/04/12 08:32 AM ET

Reuters reports that the top U.S. climate diplomat is defending President Obama’s record at international talks in Doha, Qatar.

From the story:

The United States said on Monday it was on track to meet its own target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, a plan many scientists say is still too weak to avert damaging global warming.

U.S. envoy Todd Stern defended President Barack Obama's environmental record following renewed criticism from the European Union and other delegates at a climate conference in Doha.

The Hollywood Reporter looks at Showtime's new series on climate change that again brings together Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron. Politico reports on the reuniting of the "Terminator" star and director here.

Reuters reports that Democrats want more information on last month’s fatal fire on a Gulf of Mexico oil platform.

The Associated Press reports on the end of North Carolina regulators’ probe of Duke Energy’s controversial merger with Progress Energy.

“The North Carolina Utilities Commission voted unanimously to approve a settlement announced last week and negotiated by its staff and Duke Energy lawyers. The deal defines CEO Jim Rogers' retirement at the end of 2013; sets the coming and going of several other executives and board members; and requires the company acknowledge it has 'fallen short of the commission's understanding of Duke's obligations' as a regulated utility,” AP reports.
