Leader of Dem governors promises ‘laser’ focus on climate

From BuzzFeed:

Shumlin signaled in an interview that his organization will aim to take and hold governors' mansions not by pushing Democrats to the center but with the package of liberal values that won around the country last month, including focuses on marriage equality and on climate change.

At the national level, President Obama’s second-term climate change agenda remains uncertain, and climate legislation continues to face dismal prospects on Capitol Hill despite renewed attention to the topic after Hurricane Sandy.

Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) said Thursday that she sees growing political momentum after last month’s elections.

“In the next Congress, we have added new senators who share the strong commitment to act on climate change, and we will take every opportunity to make progress in tackling this serious global threat,” she said in a video message to negotiators at United Nations climate change talks in Doha, Qatar.

However, Boxer did not offer any specifics on her agenda, and her committee office did not comment when asked about her plans.

The Environmental Protection Agency, meanwhile, is pressing ahead with rules setting carbon emissions standards for new power plants, but plans for existing plants and other industrial sources remain unclear.

BNA reported Friday that environmentalists plan to reopen talks with EPA in January about a deadline to propose overdue standards for refineries.
