News bites: California issues proposed fracking rules

California issued its first-ever draft rules on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, The Los Angeles Times reports.

And in New York, The Associated Press reports green groups are pressing the state to release details of a fracking and shale-gas drilling health impact study.

This year, U.S. oil production grew the most in one year since the first commercial well was drilled in 1859, Bloomberg notes.

Britain set a five-year plan for solar and biomass energy, Reuters reports.

A new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-led study of naturally occurring geological formations confirms global warming data from thermometers.

A new compilation of temperature records etched into ice cores, old corals, and lake sediment layers reveals a pattern of global warming from 1880 to 1995 comparable to the global warming trend recorded by thermometers.
