News bites: Railroads propel US oil boom, the latest on Chesapeake Energy, and more

By Ben Geman - 12/31/12 07:59 AM ET

The Associated Press looks at how oil is getting from booming wells in North Dakota and Montana to refineries.

“Energy companies behind the oil boom on the Northern Plains are increasingly turning to an industrial-age workhorse — the locomotive — to move their crude to refineries across the U.S., as plans for new pipelines stall and existing lines can't keep up with demand,” the news service reports.

The Wall Street Journal has the latest on a boardroom probe of Chesapeake Energy chief executive Aubrey McClendon.

Bloomberg explains why the U.S. natural gas boom is “attracting a wave of investment that may revive profits in the steel industry.”

The Associated Press reports that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) is requiring state agencies to become more energy efficient.

The Casper Star-Tribune recommends some energy words and phrases to abandon in 2013. A sample:

‘Winners and losers’
User: Energy industry groups, politicians, regulators.
What users think it means: “I don’t want the government involved in this sector of the economy.”
What users really mean: “I want the government to support the things I want and not the things I don’t.”
